Introduction
VW T6 Transporter from Herpa is a new model in 1/87-HO scale. It is item 028721. This model should be popular on model railroad layouts of the current era, or in the collection of Volkswagen enthusiasts, or in dioramas.

The 2016 T6 is the commercial version of this 6th-Generation Volkswagen vans and VW offers them in several variants.

Herpa currently catalogues 172 Volkswagen models and 4 of the VW T-series. Herpa tells us:
New type! Herpa redesigned the current VW T6 in various variants to replace the successful VW T4 in the assortment. First we release the closed station wagon in cherry red with black bumpers.

The Model
This factory assembled model is packed in an end-opening carton with a clear window. It features a holographic licensing placard on one end. The model is securely held in a form-fitted light plastic cradle; these don't look like much but several Herpa models I have received arrived in boxes crushed in shipping and yet the models were not damages. Well done Herpa!

The model is plastic and mainly molded in color. The plastic is smooth with no injection molding flaws, no flash, sink holes, seam lines nor visible ejector circles. The parts were snipped off their sprues without any burrs. It was assembled with no glue marks.

Herpa provides a sprue of optional side view mirrors.

The clear plastic of the windows is clear and without distortion allowing a good look into the interior. Herpa uses a hybrid plastic-rubber for the tires.

Detail
Each tire sports very fine tread detail only along the edges. Detailed hub caps are included. The underside of the chassis is low raised detail suggesting the underframe, spare tire, and other such detail.

The body is molded with fine raised or recessed panel detail, as appropriate. Delicate door handles are raised, as are the molded-on windshield wipers.

Fine molding recreates the grille and bumper louvers.

One thing Herpa does that I greatly appreciate is that they use clear and tinted clear lenses for the headlights and brake lights. This model has them and one can see the actual lamp patterns inside the headlights.

Looking through those nice clear windows I can see a detailed interior with bucket seats, a very detailed console and dashboard, a steering wheel, and even a separately attached rear view mirror! I can not tell if it is photo-etched but it is thin. Excellent detail!

While I did not disassemble this model, Herpa models are snap-together and can be opened up for interior detailing.

Paint and Markings
This van looks to be entirely molded in color except for the chrome on the VW emblems and the vehicle name on the back door and quarter panels. Herpa does not use decals. This version is kirschrot / cherry red.

Conclusion
I have not reviewed a Herpa model in several months and am happy to report that they are still up to the high quality I have come to know them for. The molding is excellent, as is the finish and markings. That interior detail looks fantastic and it is a shame it is not easier to put passengers in the model. I am very impressed with the clear and tinted lenses used for the lights.

The separately molded optional side mirrors certainly look better than molded-on types.

My nit-pickiness is that Herpa does not mold the tire tread detail all the way around the tire anymore, and the underside detail is all molded on. Of course, maybe VW uses panels to protect the underside of their vans?

Overall, Herpa's VW T6 Transporter is an excellent 1/87-HO model of VW's 6th-generation of this popular van. HO modelers of dioramas, railway, or car collectors should be very excited to have this model in their collection. Recommended.

Please remember to mention to Herpa and retailers that you saw this model here - on RailRoad Modeling.
