Rapido Trains has posted renders of their latest HO/1:87 project: the General Electric U 25B

Introducing the HO scale General Electric U 25B Locomotive. This engine was GE's first successful entry into the road switcher department. It was also a turning point for locomotive manufacturers as it signaled the beginning of the end for Alco and was the first of the domestic"Universal" series locomotive. Come along as we explore this unique, yet under-appreciated "U-Boat." We've got lots of firsts in the industry within this run!

That's one solid looking locomotive there.

That's one solid looking locomotive there.

Did you know that we 3D scanned a real U 25B Locomotive? We spent the day at the Southern California Railway Museum (Formerly the Orange Empire Railway Museum) in Perris, California, meticulously measuring and scanning Southern Pacific U 25BE, number 3100. But wait, that's a rebuilt U 25!We were able to get the crucial curves and shapes, then spent lots of time"backdating" the details to create an unmodified U 25B. In fact, Johnand Paul went to the Railroad Museum of New England, in Thomaston, Connecticutto measure their ex New Haven U 25B. You certainly could say we are"detail-oriented!"

Now, back to those renders and details! Did we mention an industry first? If you were thinking High Nose U 25Bs, you would be correct! But why stop there? Not only did we place those unusual corner-mounted class lights positioned correctly on the nose, we made them illuminated as well! Hoo-ah! This isn't just any U 25B... this is the ULTIMATE U 25B Locomotive. Never before has there been a dimensionally accurate high-nose U 25B done in HO Scale. That includes both plastic and brass!

The Rapido U 25B Locomotive features include:

  • Phase I, II & III units represented in 1st run (Phase IV & other units will come with future runs)
  • Single front window style for low nose units (Double front window in future runs)
  • Both low- & high-short hood versions
  • Early high- & later-low style side doors
  • Road specific details for each model
  • Working step lights on low-short hood models
  • Different exhaust stacks (depending on road name)
  • Road-specific battery box doors on engineer’s side
  • Road specific air cleaner boxes on rear
  • Working inspection lights on all units
  • Lighted control stand inside cab
  • Different types of fuel & air tanks (depending upon version)

We expect to have our first samples in the early fall.Once we have shown off the samples and we're happy with them, we'll announce an order deadline for the HO Scale U 25B Locomotives. But why wait until then? Why not order now from your favorite hobby shop or directly from us?
